Since December 9th, thousands of prisoners in Georgia have been on strike, in what is apparently the largest prisoner protest in U.S. history:

Thousands of men, from Augusta, Baldwin, Hancock, Hays, Macon, Smith and Telfair State Prisons, among others, initiated this strike to press the Georgia Department of Corrections (“DOC”) to stop treating them like animals and slaves and institute programs that address their basic human rights. I was enjoying an afternoon in the park and reading the New York Times on Sunday when I came across this doozy of an article.  The article is about a relatively small group of indigenous people in Venezuela who are living near and scavenging from a dump outside of a Ciudad Guagyana, and it’s so full of consdescending, racist bullshit that I just could not ignore it.  Let’s start with the following: Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve been out for a bit, and on Monday I’ll put up a post explaining the nature of my absence, but because it is September 11th I wanted to make sure that I included a shout out to show my solidarity with the folks at the Park 51 community center in the financial district.  The proposed community center, incorrectly dubbed “the ground zero mosque” has been stirring up quite a storm among the racists and xenophobes of this country.
